Fort Description
Kothaligad is also known as "PETHCHA KILLA" (पेठचा किल्ला) . Kothaligad is situated in Shahapur. Shahapur is approximately 21 KM towards North-East of Karjat. Karjat, is a famous railway station between Pune and Mumbai. Karjat is more famous for its WADA-PAV. This fort is more commonly known as "PETHcha Killa" i.e. Fort of PETH because of the village PETH situated at the bottom of this fort. This is a small fort. The fort attracted major attention during Chatrapati Sambhaji Mahraj's era. Auranagazeb ordered his soldiers to attack Peth (Kothaligad). Abul Kadar was incharge of this operation. He placed hes men in surrounding region of this fort to get informatoin about the strength of this fort. Mankoji Pandhere was the person who helped Abul Kadar to acquire critical information about the fort. As soon as he had his first opportunity to attack the fort, he ordered a group of 300 soldires to launch the attack. Maratha soldires managed to push them back but few of these soldires managed to reach to the "MAGAR-KOT" door of the fort. After reaching to the door, these mughal soldires started shouting "OPEN DOOR.. OPEN DOOR". Maratha soldiers felt that their men has arrived to pick up the weapons and opened the door. Thus Mughals managed to enter the fort and defeated the maratha soldiers. Very next day, Marathas blocked all the ways going towards fort. Abdul Kadar's position on fort was very critical as the ammunition was either destroyed or used in the battle. Abdul Kadar managed to hold on to the fort for almost 15 days. As the news of Abdul Kadar's position reached to Abdul Aziz, yet another mughal soldire, he ordered his son Abdul Khan to go to support Abdul Kadar. Maratha soldires led by Naroji Trambak prevented him to reach to the fort. A battle broke out between marathas and mughals. Naroji was killed in the battle. Naroji was beheaded and it was hanged in the middle of the road. Thus Mughals managed to establish complete control over the Kothaligad. The keys of the fort was sent to Aurangazeb as a symbol of victory. Auragazeb was not sure about whether Mughals really have captured the fort or its a rumor? So he sent his men to the fort to confirm the victory. After confirming the victory, he rewarded Abdul Khan. Aurangzeb renamed this fort as "MIFTAHULFATEH" means Victory Key. After this many attempts were made from Marathas to capture this fort but they went without success.
